INTERNATIONAL BRAND NAME RECOGNITION: WHERE MAGAZINE In 1985 WHERE Winnipeg was first published, debuting in the smallest tourism destination within the WHERE network. Owned since its inception by Fanfare Magazine Group, it is now read by over 300,000 people annually. The first WHERE magazine was published in Detroit in 1936, to provide essential information for business travellers. Since then WHERE has become the largest international network of destination travel magazines. Editions are published in over 40 cities globally, including all of the world's great cities--London, Paris, Rome, New York, Hong Kong and Winnipeg! RECOGNIZING FOOD EXCELLENCE: CIAO! MAGAZINE In 1997 Fanfare launched Ciao! to celebrate the food, chefs, and restaurants of the region. Top local chefs and restaurateurs subsequently joined with Ciao! to create the Cuisine Tourism Council of Manitoba to develop cuisine as a tourism draw. The Council launched Good Food Manitoba in September 2000 to celebrate regional and seasonal food. RECOGNIZING SERVICE EXCELLENCE: SILVER PLUME AWARDS In 1992 Fanfare created the annual Silver Plume Awards to recognize Hotel Employees of the Year. Awards are presented each year at a gala reception in the spring. RECOGNIZING HOSPITALITY EXCELLENCE: STARS OF THE CITY AWARDS In 1995 Fanfare created the annual Stars of the City program in partnership with the Mayor's Office. Every summer visitors to the city are asked to nominate those who have provided them with exceptional hospitality. Each fall citizens from all walks of life are recognized by the Mayor and Fanfare at a City Hall reception in their honour. Each issue of WHERE and Ciao! features the most interesting places based on those publications' themes and editorial mix. Approximately 36 restaurants are reviewed annually by reviewers who visit the restaurants anonymously and always pay for their meals (including the best new restaurants in the annual Hot New Restaurant issue). Approximately 60 retailers are selected annually for inclusion in editorial features. Selection is based on the theme of each feature, which always presents products that are distinctive, and representative of those stores. Locally owned businesses are always given priority consideration for editorial inclusion. |
